Nottingham: The legendary Robin Hood: the
archer who stole from the rich and gave to the poor.

NOTTINGHAM - As children, many of us grew up nourished by
dreams, adventures, and legends—and among them, few figures
embodied the spirit of romantic rebellion more than Robin
Hood: the archer who stole from the rich to give to the poor,
the gentleman outlaw who defied injustice and defended the
oppressed. For those who eagerly awaited every new film or
television series about him, Robin was never just a medieval
legend; he was a living presence, a symbol of courage,
freedom, and justice.
In Nottingham, for many years, there existed a place where
that legend took tangible form: The Tales of Robin Hood, a
famous tourist attraction that allowed visitors to immerse
themselves in the world of Sherwood, among reconstructions,
animated mannequins, and immersive storytelling. At the
heart of it all stood the mannequin of Robin himself—a
silent icon of a timeless myth.
Today, however, we learn with melancholy that Robin has been
“retired,” perhaps forever. The attraction permanently
closed in January 2009, after twenty years of activity, due
to difficulties in paying rent to the giant property owner,
Tesco. It was an unequal battle, in which the weight of
economics triumphed over the symbolic value of culture and
memory. But how is it possible that, in all these years, no
political, cultural, or civic movement has arisen to defend
and revive such a deeply rooted figure in the collective
imagination? Robin Hood does not belong only to Nottingham—he
belongs to the world. And yet, the very city that could have
safeguarded his identity and transformed it into a living
heritage seems to have let the opportunity slip away.
The closure of that attraction represents not only the end
of a tourist experience but also a symbolic wound: the
abandonment of a piece of fantasy, history, and myth. It may
indeed be a cultural shame, because Robin Hood is not merely
a fictional character—he is the archetype of the just rebel,
the hero of the poor, the defender of the oppressed. In an
age when cities strive for strong identities to present to
the world, Nottingham has allowed one of its brightest
torches to go out. The “retired” mannequin thus becomes a
metaphor for something deeper: the abandonment of
imagination, of popular storytelling, of the bond between
myth and memory.
Who knows how many children, wandering through those
slightly dusty corridors, dreamed of drawing their bows
alongside the outlaws of Sherwood Forest—and how many adults,
returning there, rediscovered a fragment of their own
childhood. Today, the legend remains—in books, in films, in
memories. But the danger is that it stays confined there,
deprived of the direct connection that only physical places
can offer. And so perhaps the time has come to ask: can a
city truly forget its hero? Isn’t it time to give Robin Hood
a home again—not out of nostalgia, but out of identity?
Because Robin was never a real man, yet the need for what he
represents—justice, rebellion, hope—is more real than ever.
